"to kill a king"

this week i am doing a tim roth marathon(yum). today watching "to kill a king" about oliver cromwell & charles stuart.i find it all pretty confusing. i know all about elizabeth & henry tudor, anne bolyen but i never did get into cromwell & the roundheads. what did charles stuart do that was so bad? seems like he was only acting like the other men in his family.like marie antoinette & her husband louis, he really died for no reason.just like with marie antoinette, where were his cousins(ie kings & queens of other countries)& why did THEY not help?

started off with "the cook,the thief, his wife, her lover, their baby daddy, etc". that movie was a mess to say the least. a waste of 2 hours of my life, though the costumes by jean paul gaultier were to die for!
